Pope Francis, the leader of the Roman Catholic Church, is calling for the replacement of neoliberal capitalism with a more just and humane system as part of a new encyclical. Francis declared that the current coronavirus pandemic is underlining the stark reality that capitalism is unable to meet the most basic needs of the vast majority of people. So at a time when a major religious leader begins to question and criticize capitalism, is capitalism facing a real survival crisis?
