Fair trade and development advocates are warning 30 years of progress could be wiped away by the COVID-19 pandemic, as the global economy sinks into recession and aid budgets are slashed.
The groups making that warning are Fairtrade AusNZ, Global Compact Network (part of UN Global Compact), and Sustainable Development Solutions Network.
In a briefing today, Australian business and NGO leaders will be told poorer countries are struggling to raise the funds they need to combat the pandemic, as well as pay for their economic recovery plans.
Renowned economist Jeffrey Sachs is giving that briefing.
